Save the Date! Move More Scholars Institute May 6-9, 2008
The Move More Scholars Institute is being planned for May 6-9, 2008. The Move More Scholars Institute (MMSI) is an intensive four-day training course for community-based physical activity professionals in North Carolina. Scholars learn how to promote and support physical activity in their communities by using evidence based strategies to create polices, practices, and environmental changes. (Posted December 28).

New Guide to Bring Produce to Worksites, Places of Worship, and other Settings Released
Eat Smart North Carolina: Bring Fresh Produce to Your Setting was released on Saturday, November 10 at the 22nd Annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference sponsored by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association. The document, which is produced by the NC Division of Public Health Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch, North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, Active Living by Design, North Carolina Cooperative Extension, and Center for Environmental Farming Systems, provides information for anyone who would like to have fresh fruits and vegetables available for sale at their worksite, place of worship or neighborhood. New Guide Brings Snacking Help to Consumers
Scores of us find ourselves in front of vending machines or at snack bars in search of a quick bite to eat, with many of us making poor choices. The N.C. Division of Public Health and N.C. Cooperative Extension, in support of the Eat Smart, Move More…North Carolina movement, today announced the release of Eat Smart North Carolina: Snacks and Drinks. This document will help busy consumers make better decisions when facing rows of colorful snacks and drinks. (Posted November 22)
New Program Available for Those Who Want to Lose or Maintain Weight
Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less is a new program available to help North Carolinians maintain their weight or lose those extra pounds. It will be taught starting in January by local Health Promotion Coordinators and Cooperative Extension Agents across the state. The program uses proven strategies to teach participants to live mindfully. Each lesson of the 15 week program focuses on one aspect of eating smarter and moving more.(Posted November 29)

Worksites Eating Smart and Moving More releases two new ready-to-use worksite wellness resources
On September 12, Worksites Eating Smart and Moving More released two new resources for worksites interested in creating and implementing wellness programs and policies. The Saving Dollars and Making Sense Management Guide and the Saving Dollars and Making Sense Committee Guide are must-sees for employers and employees! (Posted October 10, 2007)
Eat Smart, Move More…NC cheers on NC Senior Games State Finalists.
Eat Smart, Move More…NC sponsored the SilverStriders Fun Walk of the NC Senior Games State Finals. Participants walked three laps around a large playing field at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, NC, as they embraced the Senior Games’ spirit - taking a holistic approach to body, mind and spirit, and staying fit while enjoying the company of friends, family, spectators and volunteers. Successful Students Eat Smart and Move More Provides Tools for Advocating for Local Wellness Policies
The N.C. Division of Public Health launched a program to help school administrators and parents advocate for the implementation of wellness policies in local schools. Successful Students Eat Smart and Move More is a social marketing intervention intended to raise awareness and support of school wellness polices. The goal is to ensure that these policies are implemented, monitored and evaluated to ensure they are meeting the needs of the schools, staff and students. (posted October 23).

New State Health Plan Worksite Wellness Web site Launched
The State Health Plan launched its worksite wellness Web site on August 6th. This Web site offers a variety of useful materials including Power Point presentations, brochures with information on different topics related to worksite wellness, newsletters, success stories and links to additional resources. First-Ever Take a Child Outside Week to be Held September 24-30, 2007
Take a Child Outside Week is a national program that started here in North Carolina at the North Carolina Natural Sciences Museum. The program is designed to help children discover the natural world and gain a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live. (Posted September 9)

North Carolina Fruits and Veggies Star Awards Announced
The winners of the 2007 North Carolina Fruits & Veggies Star Awards were announced today by the N.C. Fruits & Veggies Nutrition Coalition at their annual symposium at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. The annual awards recognize successful programs in three categories: school/child care, worksites and business/other. (Posted August 8, 2007)
NC’s Move More Scholars Institute Featured in CDC Journal
The Move More Scholars Institute, a 4-day training course for community-based physical activity practitioners in North Carolina, was featured in the July edition of the Journal of Preventing Chronic Disease. The goal of the Institute is to build capacity for local physical activity practitioners to create policy and environmental change, especially with regards to the built environment. The N.C. Division of Public Health announces the Request for Applications (RFA) for the Eat Smart, Move More…North Carolina Community Grants Program for state fiscal year 07/08. New NC Obesity and Physical Activity Maps Released
To provide local health officials with information they can use to identify areas of success and concern as they work to reduce rates of obesity in their communities, the N.C. Division of Public Health has compiled maps showing each county's percentage of overweight and obese adults, as well their percentage of adults meeting daily physical activity requirements.
North Carolina joins national launch of a new public health initiative, Fruits & Veggies—More Matters
To encourage North Carolinians to eat more fruits and veggies, a new national public health initiative, Fruits & Veggies—More Matters, was introduced at an event held at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh, NC on March 19, 2007.

New Food for Thought Curriculum Released
Food for Thought is a K-5 curriculum that allows educators to teach the nutrition objectives of the Healthful Living Standard Course of Study while integrating the concepts of healthy eating and physical activity into Math and English Language Arts.
